20 and 1 tips for creating the perfect work nook

A workplace at home - the home office - is the new reality for many. It should be functional and pleasing to the eye.
The workspace at home is not just a place to accomplish tasks, but a space that should be comfortable, functional and inspiring.

In today's reality, the human workplace has fundamentally changed its geo-position and moved from offices to cafes and public places or to our homes.

Especially in the conditions of remote work it is important to create an environment that will promote productivity and favorably affect the mood.

This is why it is now especially important to pay qualitatively more attention to the workplace in home interior design.

In this article, I will share simple but effective tips for organizing the perfect workspace. From proper desk arrangement to color selection, every element plays a role.

Let's figure out how to organize your workspace at home in a comfortable, healthy and inspiring way.

Table arrangement

1 Place in the room:
Do not place your desk in front of a window to avoid glare. Optimally, place your desk sideways to the window on the non-working hand side. This way the light will be in moderation and won't glare your eyes.

2 Entrance control:
See the entrance to the room with at least your peripheral vision. If the door is behind you, you will subconsciously expect someone to burst in with a shout of “Here I am!”. This is distracting

3 Zoning in the living room:
If your workspace is in the living room, put a screen or a wall of books in front of your desk. This will help create a working atmosphere and not get distracted by a soap opera on the couch

4 Desk in the bedroom:
If your workspace is in the bedroom, place the desk away from the bed. Work and sleep are like coffee and tea: good separately, but they don't go together. Separate them with a screen or shelving unit.

Characteristics and organization of the workplace

The dimensions of your desk top are very important if you want to work efficiently and comfortably. Insufficient depth of the workplace can affect your vision, correct posture and working arm position, and an overly large surface will create unnecessary clutter.

Let's take a look at how to choose the right desktop table top depth just for you.

If you work on a laptop

5 The optimal table top depth is 60 cm.
For daily work throughout the working day, it is desirable to have a table top with a depth of about 60 cm. This will allow you to sit more comfortably and will not overload the space.
For short work on a laptop, the depth of the table top can be reduced to 50 cm.
Depths greater than 60 cm can lead to you having to reach for the laptop keyboard, which can lead to poor posture and vision.

If you work on a desktop computer

The optimal depth of the table top is 70 cm or more.
6 The most important thing is that the screen should be at a comfortable distance from your eyes (about 50-60 cm). That is, it is on the size of the screen that the depth of the table top of the desktop should depend. And in the distance between the monitor and the gas already exactly fit the keyboard and mouse.
7 Depth 80-90 cm is suitable if you work with documents or notebook, notebook. With this depth of the tabletop you will get more freedom to organize your workspace.

Storage and organization of the workplace at home

Storage organization is divided into three levels to optimize space, keep things tidy, and reduce visual clutter.
Let's take a look at how to use each of these levels effectively.

Above the desk (books, shelves, decor items)

This space is ideal for storing things that aren't needed on a daily basis, but need to be on hand or in sight.

8 Books. Arrange books by subject or color to serve not only as a useful source of information, but also as interior decorations. Books can be placed on open shelves or in beautiful boxes.
9 Decor. Paintings, frames with photos, plants - all this can also be located just above the workplace.

On the desk (necessary, for quick access)

This is the main working level, where all the items you need on a regular basis should be located:
10 Computer, laptop, keyboard, mouse. Basic devices for work, nothing should interfere with their use.
11 Documents and folders. If you need to work with papers often, use document stands, files or organizers so they don't take up a lot of space on your desk but are always at hand. They can also be above the desk, but no more than an arm's length away.
12 Baskets and Organizers. If you have any number of small items accumulating on the surface of your desk over time, there is no sense of order, even if all those little things are needed. For example, pencils, pens, paper clips, etc. In this case, a beautiful wooden box, organizer or basket will do. This approach will hide all the little things inside this storage item and reduce visual clutter.
13 A clock, a cup with a drink. These little things not only make the workplace more comfortable, but also create an atmosphere.

Under the desk (secondary, hidden storage)

Under the desk, you can organize storage for things that don't need to be in plain sight but still need to be accessible:
14 Cupboards or drawers. For more intimate storage of documents or personal items so they don't create clutter in the workspace.
15 Cables and chargers. If there is space under the desk, it is convenient to organize the storage of cables and other technical accessories that can get tangled without disturbing the order on the desk. Now it is very relevant to create a “high” tabletop with a drawer the entire length of the table, in which you can place including wires. This way, the design of your workplace will be clean, minimalistic and of high quality.

Try to categorize the items in your home office into tiers and you will not only organize the space, but also create a comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing work environment.

Workstation design, materials and colors

16 When selecting a table top material for your desk, you should choose warm materials such as wood or leather. This is due to the fact that a cold table top will make the joints in your hands start to ache. Remember that a healthy living and working environment is always above visual preferences.
17 The choice of color depends directly on the overall color scheme of your home. But it's better to prioritize nuanced colors like beige, brown, and green for your workspace. Green is the perfect color for the workspace, it calms you down but doesn't put you to sleep.

Lighting in the workplace area of the home

18 Use swivel lamps with an opaque lamp shade so that the light does not shine directly into your eyes.
19 It is important not to forget the temperature of the light - around 4000 Kelvin. This lighting mimics soft, non-sunny natural light:
it eliminates eye strain by eliminating the lighting contrast between the brightness of the screen and the light around it;
simulates daylight, where the human body is ready to be awake and work efficiently.

Design around the home office for inspiration

20 The workplace should inspire work in general and creativity in individual tasks.
Place a photo of loved ones, motivational inscriptions, a picture, an art object or some artwork.
In the photo in front of the desk hangs a photo of talented photographer Anna Petrova and Prague.

21 Plants play an important role in decorating the workplace. They both inspire and soothe. Plants are like living friends and helpers - you can take care of them during the necessary breaks from working on the computer.
Now you are ready to conquer the world without leaving home. Good luck and good mood in your work!
